Dear Jack

Jacks_mannI got to see both my brothers in Iowa over Christmas (they traveled back to the snowy Midwest from LA), and it was a great time as always. Both Corey (formerly MTV, now at Yahoo Studios) and Kyle (works for Fox Sports Radio and Clear Channel) always have cool and interesting projects going on in their lives, which I love living vicariously through.

Corey's latest project, which he has been working on for the last year or so, is a documentary movie about Andrew McMahon. Never heard of him? I hadn't either, but thanks to Corey, I'm now a HUGE fan of his. Andrew was the lead singer of a 90's alt-punk band called Something Corporate, and is now fronts the band Jack's Mannequin. Their debut album is amazing--even my wife and kids sing along to the piano-infused rock! My brother compares Andrew's talent to Elton John.

Anyway, Andrew had an extremely difficult battle with cancer recently, and kept a video-diary throughout it. So Corey got the opportunity to edit, direct, and produce this into a documentary entitled Dear Jack. He even got a well-known musician to narrate it (but I can't tell you who it is until Corey does his official press release).

The next step with the movie is hoping and praying that it makes it into a few of the major film festivals, and is ultimately picked up by a studio to be released nationwide. Check out the trailer here!

Carter, not sure what you thought about the incredibly popular book Blue Like Jazz, but after reading your blog I think you and your readers would enjoy the new book: Brown Like Coffee. It's also for students and I found it at brownlikecoffee.com
I would love for you to read it and critique it for us.
